Barbecue, Fireworks and Night-Fly 2000

In Association With Derbyshire Radio Control Flyers

& Alport Model Flying Club.

This year's event was bigger than ever. The day started rainy, windy and cold, and really just got colder !!!  However the usual bunch of nutters turned up to brave the conditions. It all kicked off about lunchtime, when we made the decision to 'go for it.' We got the food out while Brian an Ken decided to have a go with their pattern ships. After that loads of members started to turn up, all bringing with them the regulation FIREWORKS.

Those who were not brave enough to fly congregated around the recently lit barbecue. Dave Toft (yes, he of McToft restaurants ltd) started to cook the food. Suddenly no one was interested in flying, & everyone became hungry all of a sudden. 2 bags of charcoal later, the rain and cloud had moved away and more members had set up their models and were flying. The light started to dim, but 2 club members were not bothered about packing up. Everyone thought this was strange but no-one questioned them. Dave Probert disappeared and turned up 10 minutes later with a bottle of glow fuel, and it really was GLOW FUEL (see picture). The light then totally went and Martin did the biz with the lighting on the hut. For some strange reason Dave Probert and Ant Mullins started to fuel up their models ! Now we knew that they were crackers before, but we thought they had totally lost the plot!

From the hut, the sound of starting engines could be heard, then Ant and Dave's models lit up as if by magic and set off across the runway - they were actually flying in the pitch dark with lights on their models !!!!! After about 10 minutes of aerobatics and manic giggling from the pits area both models waved goodnight in knife edge and landed to a mass of applause to which they responded with pirouettes on the ground!

They both packed up and we all knew it was time for the things we were all waiting for - THE FIREWORKS. What followed was a seamless display of fireworks lasting just over 30 minutes- Spectacular stuff.

Thanks must go to everyone who attended and to Dave Toft for doing his stuff on the barbecue.
